Bear Snacks

Bear Snacks
Well, these are snacks for people, not bears. Please don't feed the bears.

Bear Paw Cookies | Ranger Rick Magazine

Bake with BEAR -- Make Flippin Fun Pancakes!, BEARilliant Muffins, Perfect Porridge! and Straw-BEARy Scones.

If you live in the United States or any other country that doesn't use the Metric System, you can convert the measurements into US customary units. This would be an excellent math lesson.

You can use (just) fruit roll ups or just dried, frozen, or fresh cranberries, raisins, blueberries or any other fruits you like to use for the recipes instead of the BEAR yoyos or paws. Use your imagination.

Teddy Bear Rolls | CraftyBaking -- You can use this recipe or make your own using the ideas of these cute bears if you can't eat wheat/gluten like we do. You can probably make these more healthy by using fruits (e.g. raisins) instead of candy for the face.

Ladybug Theme

Ladybug, ladybug, ladybugs everywhere! We all know this cute insect as a ladybug. It is called a ladybug, a lady beetle, or ladybird (in Britain). If you have plants or weeds, the you have one happy bug. They are hunting for bugs to eat. Having these fun ladybugs around is excellent for the environment, your health, and the health of the ones around you. If you let nature take over then there will not be all the bad pesticides that harms everything. Save your environment (and yourself and others) by having ladybugs in your garden.

Here are some photos I took.

Letter A

I first put this on my website in 2001 (before I had this blog). I have added more resources since then.

ABC's of Snacking: Letter Aa

LANGUAGE ARTS

"A" Book

Letter Book
If you want, you can make a letter book (especially for preschoolers). You can have your child or student make their own book.  Have them draw pictures or glue in pictures that begin with the letter.

Version One:
Place each of the pages on construction paper.  Fold it in half before having the child do his/her activities.  Glue each page to each other.  Take a piece of construction paper and glue that to the front and back pages.  Write on the front the child's name, below that, use yarn for the upper and lower case of that letter, and then, write "Letter Aa Book", "My Letter Aa Book", or anything you think up.

Cheaper Version:
Another way to do letter books is to cut the amount of construction paper you need for the book in half (this saves on paper and glue).  Reduce the activity sheets to fit on one side (this saves computer ink).  Staple the pages together when you have finished that letter of the week.  Write on the front the child's name, below that, use yarn for the upper and lower case of that letter, and then, write "Letter Aa Book", "My Letter Aa Book", or anything you think up.

You can use any of these ideas or use your imagination for the words you would like to use for your "A Book".

Page 1:  Use an "Apple dot-to-dot".
Apple Dot-to-Dot: Google

On the top left hand side, glue half of a tooth pick and then two tooth picks to make "A".  Make an "a" using glue.  Sprinkle rice (arroz in Spanish) on it.

Animals: Cut out pictures of animals from pet store ads and/or magazines and glue them on the page.

Ants: Follow the same instructions as "Ant Art".

Apple: Apple seed, picture of apple/apples from grocery store ads and/or magazines, and make apple prints using paint.

Label the objects.

Page 2:  Collage of "A" words.
Page 3: Use your "Ant Art".

CRAFTS

Puppets: Letter A
Alligator (first-school)

Alligator Paper Bag Puppet Craft
Use a small paper bag.  Cut a green piece of construction paper to be about 9 x 5" (or the size of the bag).  Glue it on the bottom part of the paper bag.  Cut a piece to be 6 x 5" Round off the bottom (use this as a pattern).  Cut another piece but make it 4 1/2 x 5".  Glue the top part of the alligator's snout to the top of the paper bag. Make two eyes about 1 1/4".  Color black pupils on them.  Color two nostrils on the alligators snout on the bottom.  Glue onto the bottom part of the flap but only where the flap ends.  Cut two pieces of white paper together and fold over.  Cut teeth using the pattern (making triangles).  Cut them out to make a set of teeth.  Glue on the top and the bottom of the alligator's snout.  Make a large red tongue to be about 4 1/4" long.  Glue on the bottom of the flap.  Make two eyes and make pupils on them.  Glue on the top of the head.  Make green or brown marks on the alligator.

ARTS AND CRAFTS
Leaf Painting
Using a paint brush, brush paint onto various leaves (vein side up).  Place the paint side down of the leaf onto the paper.  Place a piece of wax paper over the leaves.  Roll a rolling pin or bottle across the leaves.  Remove wax paper and leaves.

Leaf Rubbing
Place your leaf (vein side up) under your piece of paper (tape it on for younger children) and take a crayon and rub your leaf. Do it in different colors like red, yellow, orange, brown, and green.

Leaf Art
Cut a leaf pattern (using the links on this page) out of thick paper or glue on a piece of cardboard. Design your leaf pattern by gluing cold cereal, noodles (colored or plain), oatmeal, or rice on it.

Feather Art
Take a small colored paper plate (or white if you like). Glue a lot of feathers on the plate. Make a hole using a hole puncher. In order to hang it, place a piece of yarn and tie it in a knot or a small piece of pipe cleaner and twist it together. Let the glue dry.

Crumbled Leaf Art
Collect some leaves. Let dry.  Brush some glue on paper and sprinkle the dried leaves on.

Fall Collage
Go on a walk. Collect leaves, flowers, twigs, etc.  Brush some glue on paper.  Place the items you collected onto the paper.  Let dry.

Fall Picture
Collect leaves, twigs, rocks, pine needles, etc. Glue them onto a piece of paper.  Make animals, people, or other objects.  Draw or paint arms onto them.

MATH
Leaf Math

Cut the number of a leaf pattern you would like.  For example, I cut 12 red maple leaves from Kids Domain (listed on this page).  Laminate.  Write various addition or subtraction problems on index cards. For example, 1+1= 1+2=,... Have the child use this as manipulatives to figure out the answer to the problems on the cards.  Make an activity sheet with the problems you have on the index cards. Have them write the answers by the problem.  You can have older children write the problems you have on the index cards onto a piece of paper and write the answer by each problem.

Acorn Math
Follow the above directions except use the acorn patterns located at TeachNow.com for this activity.

I have some acorn math for sale at TeachersPayTeachers. Go to the below link to view them.
Acorn eBooks @ TPT Desert Blossom Learning

Acorn
Acorn Alphabet Game
Using a frozen 12 or 16 ounce juice container, place construction paper around it.  Tape the seam closed with clear plastic tape and the top with clear mailing tape.  You will need to have one for each container.  Make 26 acorns.  Print one page and then cut out 26 onto brown construction paper.  Write the lower case alphabet on one side and the upper case alphabet on the other side.  Laminate or place clear contact paper on them.  Have the child hunt for acorns scattered over the floor, put them in order, and say the alphabet.

Acorn Alphabet File Folder Game or Table Game
You can make separate acorns too.  Use 52 pattern acorns.  Write the lower case alphabet on 26 of them and then the uppercase alphabet on 26 more.  Follow the above directions.  Place one set in a file folder (or on a table or the floor).  Match the correct letter with other matching letter.

Ten Apples Up On Top!
Ten Apples Up on Top! by Dr. Seuss

Read: Ten Apples Up On Top!
Have the children count the apples as you read the story.
Place a large apple tree and have a child(ren) place ten red apples numbered 1-10 on it (or you can use blank apples or apple stickers).  Have the children  count as you place the apples on the tree and after all the apples are on the tree.

Apple Craft
Use the apple pattern at PreschoolExpress: Apple Patterns. Cut the apple out of red paper. Cut a green leaf. Cut a brown stem and glue onto the back of the apple. Make finger prints using your favorite color of paint. Hole punch a hole and hang using yarn.

Apple Tree Craft
Take a 9-inch paper plate.  Make a brown trunk (with a larger bottom).  Glue it onto the back of the paper plate.  (For older children (or homeschooling), have the children tear some brown construction paper for the trunk and glue it on a white trunk.)  Fingerprint with red, green, and/or yellow paint (or glue pieces of paper) onto the paper plate.  (If desired, you can number ten of the painted or glued on apples.)

Apple Tree
Author unknown
Way up in the apple tree
Two red apples smiled at me
I shook that tree as hard as I could
Down came the apples
Mmmm - were they good!
As you say this fingerplay, have the children place their hands above them (connecting their fingers together) to form a apple tree.
Show 2 fingers and smile.
Shake the tree.
Drop two rolled up red socks (parent/teacher at first and then have each child take turns).
Rub tummy (stomach). Way Up High (In The Apple Tree) is on "Toddler Trio" or as a separate CD called "Silly Favorites".  The above fingerplay is a little different. It also has other verses on the CD.

Ten Little Apples Book
Make an apple tree shaped book.
On the cover and the first page, write, "Ten (10) Little Apples".  On the left hand side of the book, number each page through the number "10".  Have the child paint the correct number of apples on each page.  (For older children, you can have them tear and glue the correct number of pieces of red construction paper onto the page.) In the inside, glue the words on the opposite side of the cover.

Ten Little Apples Song and Flannel Board Activity
Trace around a small round object using a pencil (or use a circle pattern).  Cut out ten apples using red (or green or yellow) felt.  Make a tree trunk using brown felt and the a large green piece (for the leaves) using green felt.  Have the children place them on the flannel board as this song is sung or you can purchase some more detailed apples with the below apple flannel board stories / felt board stories.

Ten Little Apple Seeds Book
Make an apple book called, "Ten (10) Little Apple Seeds".  On the cover and the first page, write, "10 Little Apple Seeds".  On the left hand side of the book, number each page through the number "10".  Have the child paint the correct number of seeds on each page.  (For older children, you can have them glue pieces of brown yarn or apple seeds.) In the inside, glue the words on the opposite side of the cover.

Apple Math Activities and Apple Math Books
Apple Graphing
Have each child bring in his/her favorite type of apple.  On a large piece of paper, graph the type (or color) each child likes. Have the children count each type (or color) of apple.

Apple Toss
Roll up different colors of socks (red, green, and/or yellow).  Have the child toss the sock apples into a basket or box.  Have the child count as he/she throws it into the basket or box.  After the child is done throwing the socks, have he/she count how many landed into the basket or box.

Apple Number Game (File Folder)
1.   Trace 22 apple shape from a cookie cutter or an apple pattern onto paper, construction paper, or a blank index card.
2.   Cut them out.
3.   If you don't use red paper, use a red crayon to color the apple cards.  Color the stems brown.  On one set, make seeds using a brown crayon or colored pencil.
4.   Write the numbers (0, 1, 2,  ...) on one set of apples and draw the number of seeds on another set of apples.  (For the number "0", just leave it blank.)
5.   Laminate the cards and file folder (at least put some clear laminate paper where the tape will be placed).
6.   Place 6 pieces of double sided tape in the inside part of a file folder and 5 pieces of tape on the other side.
(If you want, you can make another file folder game (or more) for 11-20, 21-30, etc.)
7.   Place the cards in ascending order on the pieces of tape.
8.   Write the name of the game (and picture of an apple) on the flap.  (You can write the directions on the front of the file folder.)
9.   Tape an index card (you might need to cut it some) onto the right side of the opened folder (on the bottom right hand side).  Place the cards inside there.
Another option: Hole punch two holes in the back of a small sealable bag.  Place a piece of yarn through it.  Tie off on the back of the file folder.  Place the apple cards into the bag on the right side of the opened folder (on the bottom right hand side).
10. Have the child match the correct card with the other card.
For older children, you can make another set of cards and write the number words on the apples.  Have the child match either the number (0, 1, 2, ...) or the number of seeds.

* I like using double sided tape because you can take them off and have the child put the numbers in the correct order on a table or floor.

Apple Game
Apple Number Game
Take a cookie cutter or PreschoolExpress: Apple Patterns (reduce them some so you can get a lot on one page) and trace or copy 20 of them.  Color them red and the stem brown.  Number 10 of them, "1, 2, ... 10.  The other 10, draw 1 apple seed, 2 apple seeds, ... 10 apple seeds on them.  Laminate or place clear contact paper on them.  Have the child place them in order.  If they are older and/or understand the concept of matching the number with the number of seeds, have them do that too.
Note: You can make this a file folder game.

The Worm Went Through the Apple
Copyright © 2002 Barbara Pratt.  All rights reserved.

Tune of: "For He's a Jolly Good Fellow"

Have one child or adult be a worm and the other be an apple.  Have the worm go through the apple (between the legs).
The worm went  through the apple, the worm went through the apple.
The worm went through the apple, to see what he could see.
And all that he could see, and all that he could see
Was the other side of the apple, the other side of the apple
The other side of the apple, was all that he could see.
